Find the wind

Steer, ease the sheets, feel the boat lean in. Behind the forest the wind drops and turns shifty, and you can see it on the water.

Take your time

Follow the shore past the town and the forest, find a quiet bay, tie up at a pier and walk ashore. Nothing is waiting for you to finish it.

Share the lake

Other sailors' boats on the same water, their names above them, one wind and one time of day for everyone.

Where is this?

The land of a thousand lakes.

Masuria, Mazury in Polish, is a region of forests and lakes in northeast Poland. There are more than two thousand of them, and many are joined by rivers and canals into the Great Masurian Lakes, where Poles have gone sailing for generations.

In the game you sail one of them, Lake Mikołajskie, a long, narrow lake at the heart of the Great Masurian Lakes. People here still tell of the King of the Whitefish, Król Sielaw, a giant fish that tore the fishermen's nets.

The lake

A real place, not a level.

Five kilometres of Lake Mikołajskie: the town and its 1,347 buildings, the marinas, the forest shore, and the red and green buoys where the real ones float.

Good to know.

Play in your browser

Will it run on my computer?

On a desktop or laptop with a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari and a reasonably recent graphics card. The first visit prepares the graphics for a minute or two; later visits are much faster.

Is it actually calm?

Yes. No goals, no timers, no score. Wind, water, and the town going by.

Do I need to know how to sail?

No. Steer with A and D and leave the sails on auto. Take over the trim when you feel like it.

Will it cook my laptop?

It lowers its resolution on its own to keep the boat moving smoothly. You can turn the quality down further in Settings.

What's the catch?

None. Halsem is a free, independent project. No ads, no account, nothing to buy.

I'm on my phone.
